Breathing & TMJ Flashcards
What is the relationship between spinal stability and respiration?
Almost all primary and accessory muscles of respiration have a postural function.
If postural stability is required when the physiologic demand for oxygen increases, the nervous system always prioritizes respiration.
Relaxed breathing occurs through mouth or nose?
Both stages of breathing should occur through nose when relaxed
What are primary respiratory faults?
- lifting up of rib cage during inspiration
- chest movements predominate abdominal movements
- no lateral excursion of lower ribs
What is paradoxical breathing?
Abdomen moves in during inhalation and out during exhalation.
Often accompanied by inability to maintain abdominal brace.
What are common secondary respiratory faults?
- shallow breathing with limited movement of abdomen or rib cage
- abdomen / chest sequence altered
- rhythm is abrupt or effortful
- uneven or rapid inhalation / exhalation
- tension in face, jaw, lips, tongue
- sighs or yawns frequent
What are the 3 phases of inhalation in their proper order?
- Movement begins in abdomen
- Lower rib cage widens horizontally
- Upper ribs fan open
In what positions should breathing be assessed?
- seated / standing
- supine
- prone
- functional
What range of mouth opening suggests muscular problems?
Restrictions at 8-10mm
Biting down on a tongue depressor unilaterally will usually affect pain. What does pain on each side mean?
- increases muscular pain and decreases joint pain ipsilaterally
- decreases muscle pain and increases joint pain contralaterally
What are the 4 muscles of mastication?
- masseter
- temporalis
- medial ptyergoid
- lateral ptyergoid
How many muscle bellies does temporalis have?
3
