Breathing & TMJ Flashcards

1
Q

What is the relationship between spinal stability and respiration?

A

Almost all primary and accessory muscles of respiration have a postural function.

If postural stability is required when the physiologic demand for oxygen increases, the nervous system always prioritizes respiration.

Q

What are primary respiratory faults?

A
  • lifting up of rib cage during inspiration
  • chest movements predominate abdominal movements
  • no lateral excursion of lower ribs

Q

What is paradoxical breathing?

A

Abdomen moves in during inhalation and out during exhalation.

Often accompanied by inability to maintain abdominal brace.

Q

What are common secondary respiratory faults?

A
  • shallow breathing with limited movement of abdomen or rib cage
  • abdomen / chest sequence altered
  • rhythm is abrupt or effortful
  • uneven or rapid inhalation / exhalation
  • tension in face, jaw, lips, tongue
  • sighs or yawns frequent

Q

What are the 3 phases of inhalation in their proper order?

A
  1. Movement begins in abdomen
  2. Lower rib cage widens horizontally
  3. Upper ribs fan open

Q

Biting down on a tongue depressor unilaterally will usually affect pain. What does pain on each side mean?

A
  • increases muscular pain and decreases joint pain ipsilaterally
  • decreases muscle pain and increases joint pain contralaterally
