Breathing Rates Flashcards
What does a peak flow meter do?
Measures the rate at which air is expelled from the lungs
What do vitalographs do?
Measures forced expiratory volume in 1 second
What does a spirometer do?
Measures different aspects of lung volume (e.g air inspired and expired from lungs)
What is tidal volume?
Amount of air moving in or out of the lungs at resting rate
What is vital capacity?
Maximum amount of air inhaled and exhaled
What is inspiratory reserve volume?
Extra volume of air that can be inspired
What is expiratory reserve volume?
Extra volume of air that can be expired
What is residual volume?
Volume of air that is left in your lungs after forced expiration
What is total lung capacity?
Sum of vital capacity and residual volume
What is breathing rate?
Amount of breaths per minute
What is the equation for ventilation rate?
Tidal volume x breathing rate
What is forced expiratory volume?
Maximum volume of air that can be breathed out in one second
What is forced vital capacity?
Maximum volume of air that is possible to breath out of lungs after a deep breath in
What outcome do you get with a spirometer?
Creates a spirometer trace
What precautions would you take when using a spirometer?
Soda lime should be fresh and functioning
Mouthpiece should be sterilised between each use
