Breathing Mechanics Flashcards
What type of process is inspiration at rest
Active process
During inspiration what is the shape of the diaphragm
Flattens / contracts
Diaphram during inspiration
Contracts to move down and flatter a during contraction - this causes the volume of the thoracic activity to increase.
Greater space in diaphram =
Decrease in pressure
Pressure inside the cavity is lower than pressure outside the body so =
Air rushes in (gases move from high to low pressure points)
Inspiration during exercise
Demand for 02 increases and as co2 production increases so does VE (to remove co2)
During exercise what muscles help lift the ribs up further
Sternocleidomasteroid , pectoral is minor , scalenes
The sternocleidomastroid and the scalenes and the pectorials minor help what at inspiration during exercise
Help lift the ribs up further - increases volume - decreases pressure - increases rate and depth of breathing and higher TV + VE
What type of process is expiration at rest ?
Passive process
Main muscles involved at inspiration at rest
External intercostals (lies between each rib)
Diaphram
Main muscles involved at expiration at rest
External intercostals
Diaphram
During expiration at rest what do the muscles do
Decrease the volume of the thoracic activity
What happens at inspiration when muscles relax
-The rib cage drops down and in
-Pressure in the lungs increases (as space is smaller)
-gases move from high to low partial pressure
What process is expiration during exercise
Goes from an passive to active process
What muscles are involves during expiration during exercise
Internal Intercostals
Rectus abdominus
