Breathing and Respiration (8C) Flashcards
Define alveoli
Tiny air sacs at the end of the bronchioles
Define bronchioles
A tiny branch of air tubes in the lungs
Define bronchus
A large airway that leads from the trachea (windpipe) to a lung. The plural of bronchus is bronchi.
Define capillaries
Capillaries are delicate blood vessels that exist throughout your body. They transport blood, nutrients and oxygen to cells in your organs and body systems
Why are the walls of the capillaries and alveoli so thin?
The lining of the alveoli is very thin so that gases can quickly diffuse through it. This property allows nutrients and oxygen to travel through the bloodstream and diffuse into the tissues.
Why do alveoli have a large surface area?
The small round alveoli allow for an amazingly large surface area for this gas exchange to take place
