Breathing Flashcards
What is breathing?
the process of getting air in and out of the lungs.
What happens when you breathe in?
Intercostal muscles pull ribs upwards and outwards and diagphragm moves down. Increases volume of chest cavity. Decreases pressure. Air rushes to lungs
What happens when you breathe out?
Intercostal muscles relax, diagphragm moves up, decreases volume in chest cavity, increases pressure. Air rushes out.
What is the route of air when breathing in?
Air goes down trachea, through bronchi and bronchioles and into alveoli. Then Gas exchange takes place.
How do alveloi adapt for gas exchange?
They have moist walls to help gas diffuse better, and they have thin walls with only one layer of cells to minimize diffusion distance.
What happens when someone with asthma breathes in?
The muscles around the bronchioles contract, narrowing the airway.
What do people with asthma carry with them to help the asthma?
An inhaler containing a drug which opens up the airways.
What are negative effects that smoking causes?
Emphysema, Inflamation and damage to lungs. Lung cancer.
How to test someones vital capcity?
Make them blow into a peak flow meter.
