Breathing Flashcards
Why do multicellular organisms required specialised breathing cells in reference to diffusion
Unlike unicellular organisms, multicellular cells are not in direct contact with the outside environment. Therefore, diffusion cannot meet their oxygen requirements

mechanism of breathing in and out
Inhalation-
Diaphragm contracts
External intercostals contract
Chest cavity increases in volume
Pressure decreases
Atmospheric pressure is higher than in the lungs
Air flows from high to low and enters the lungs
Exhalation:
Diaphragm relaxes
Internal intercostals contract
Chest cavity volume decreases
Pressure increases
Air flows from high to low and exits the lungs
difference in composition between inhaled and exhaled air
The amount of inhaled air contains 21% of oxygen and 0.04% of carbon dioxide, while the air we breathe out contains 16.4% of oxygen and 4.4% of carbon dioxide
Where is the sight of gas exchange
Alveoli
how the alveoli are adapted to perform the function of gas exchange
The alveoli present in the lungs have thin walls composed only of a single layer of cells in order to minimize the diffusion distance. Their walls are moist which helps the gases to diffuse better.
the biological effects of smoking on the lungs and circulatory system, including CHD
-Smoking damages the lining of the arteries
-Smoking increases the formation of plaque in blood vessels. Coronary Heart Diseaseoccurs when arteries that carry blood to the heart muscle are narrowed by plaque
-the tar turns lungs black
