Breathing Flashcards
When you run what happens and why?
Your breathing rate increases and your inhalation is deeper. This is because our muscle cells are respiring more using up more oxygen.
What is the formula for respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen ——> Carbon dioxide + Water
Why do we need a faster blood flow when we exercise?
We need it as it takes oxygen from the lungs to the cells and co2 from the cells to the lungs.
How do we know when to increase our heart rate and breathe deeper?
The brain detects a change in the co2 concentration and signals to the body to increase the heart rate and breathe deeper
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration
What increases the rate of diffusion in our bodies?
Thin cells rows, maintaining a steep concentration gradient (good ventilation), continuous perfusion, high surface area & moistening the air so the o2 dissolves easier
What is the pathway to the lungs?
The larynx, Uvula, Pharynx, Epiglottis, Trachea, Bronchus, Bronchioles, Alveoli
What happens when we inhale?
- Diagram contracts
- External intercostal muscles contract
- Volume of lungs / chest cavity increases
- Pressure decreases inside of the lungs
- Pressure outside is more than inside the lungs
- Air moves from high to low pressure
- Air moves from outside into the lungs
What happens when we exhale?
- Diagram relaxes
- Internal intercostal muscles contract
- Volume of lungs/ chest cavity decreases
- Pressure increases inside of lungs
- Pressure in our lungs is more than outside
- Air moves from high to low pressure
- Air moves from lungs to outside
What is the organisations in our body (going from smallest to biggest)
Cells, Tissues, Organs, Organ Systems, Organism
