BF benefits for mom and baby?

A

Mom- less chance of hemorrhage, breast/ovarian cancer, osteoporosis, and delayed return of period

Baby- decreased chance of asthma/allergies/ear infection/chest infection/stomach infections, receive antibodies from mom through BF

What is colostrum?

A

First rich yellow milk that’s packed with antibodies from mom that helps with immunity and GI stuff

What is prolactin and oxytocin?

A

P- hormone that pro milk making, peaks in end of pregnancy/increase after delivery of placenta

O- causes uterus to contract/prevents bleeding after birth, helps with let down reflex by causing muscles around milk cells to squeeze

Signs of babies wanting to feed?

A

Stretching, opening mouth, hands near mouth, and sucking motions

Latching process?

A
  1. Nipple opposite to babies nose
  2. Tickle upper lip with nipple
  3. Baby opens mouth wide and lifts chin
  4. Chin touches breast first
  5. Nipple far back in baby’s mouth
  6. Baby nose touches breast (baby breathes out side of nose)

Different positions for BF?

A
  1. Laid back- good for shoulder/muscle tension
  2. Cross cradle- good for premature/low muscle tone babies, hold babies straight on their side in front of mom, one hand supporting head while other supports breast
  3. Football- baby held at side of mom, good for moms with C/S or big breasts

Steps for hand expressing breast milk?

A
  1. Massage breast
  2. Place thumb and first finger on either side of nipple
  3. Push thumb and finger toward chest wall
  4. Roll thumb like you’re making a thumb print
