What are breast cysts?
Epithelial lined fluid-filled cavities
This is when lobules become distended due to blockage, usually in the perimenopausal age group.
Clinical features
Singularly or with multiple lumps and can affect one or both breasts
On palpation cysts appear as a distinct smooth masses
Investigations
Mammography
USS for definitive diagnosis
Persisting symptomatic or undeterminable cystic masses may be aspirated.
Mammography findings
Halo shape
When can cancer be excluded in breast cysts by looking at aspirate?
Excluded if…
Free of blood
Lump disappears
If not send cystic fluid should be sent for cytology
Management
No further management needed
Self-resolution
Complications
2-3 times greater risk of developing breast cancer.
Fibroadenosis might develop
