Benign fluid-filled sacs

Usually disappear after menopause; related to hormone changes
Exact cause unknown
Describe the epidemiology of Breast Cysts
Common in >35 yrs esp perimenopausal
Describe the appearance of Breast Cysts
Small lump
Rounded
Fluid-filled
Not fixed to surrounding tissue
List 3 symptoms of Breast Cysts
Breast pain
Tenderness
Increased lump size + tenderness just before menstruation
How are Breast Cysts investigated?
Triple assessment
What is seen on imaging of Breast Cysts?
Simple cysts, well-circumscribed with sharp borders.
USS better for cystic masses
(Mammography can’t distinguish between cystic + solid masses)
What investigation confirms Breast Cysts?
Aspiration
Cyst fluid not sent for cytology unless uniformly bloodstained
How are Breast Cysts managed?
Can be safely left in situ
Best practice to aspirate the cyst at 1st presentation to confirm dx + relieve physical Sx + anxiety of having a breast lump.
How are women with large numbers of breast cysts be managed?
Should not be subjected to repeated aspirations unless the cysts are causing intolerable symptoms or there is clinical concern.
