Breast anatomy Flashcards
where do the breast horizontally extends from and to
lat. border of the sternal border to the mid-axillary line
where do the breast vertically extends from and to
2nd to the 6th ribs
what muscles do the breast superficially lies on
- pectoralis major
- serratus anterior (lat.)
- External oblique (inferiorly)
what supports the breast glandular tissue
Pectoral fascia + suspensory ligaments
Arterial supply to the medial aspect of the breast
internal thoracic (mammary) artery
where do the internal thoracic (mammary) artery arise from?
subclavian
4 vessels
Arterial supply to the lateral aspect of the breast
- Lateral thoracic
- Thoracoacromial
- Lateral mammary branches
- Mammary branch
Venous drainage of the breast
- axillary vein
- internal thoracic veins
Most common node for breast lymphatic drainage
Axillary lymph node
where do the lymphatic drainage of skin of the breast (inc. nipple / areola) goes to
subareolar lymphatic plexus
Borders of axillary clearance
Apex border: Axillary vein
Medial: Seratus ant.
Lateral: Latissimus dorsi
Nerve structures in axillary clearance
- Medially: Long thoracic nerve on serratus ant. muscle damage –> wing scapula
- Laterally: Thoracodorsal nerve bundle on Latissimus dorsi –> weakness in climbing muscles
