Brazil Population Distribution Flashcards
Locate 2 anomalies in the population distribution for Brazil
Brasilia and Manaus
Describe the general population distribution in Brazil
High density at the coast, lower density further inland
Why is Brasilia an anomaly in the population distribution for Brazil?
Because it was going to be made into the capital in 1960
Why is Manaus an anomaly in the population distribution for Brazil?
Because this area of the Amazon rainforest has lots of rubber trees, which quickly became an industry for the area in the 1850-1900
Name a historical reason for the population being so high on the coast and explain why (+dev.)
When the Portuguese colonists came to Brazil, their settlements were on the coast, likely due to there being fish in the seas providing food.these early settlements then became major ports economic centres which attracted people because of jobs available.
Give a reason why the population is so low inland.
The tropical climate areas were inhospitable and so remained unpopulated for a long time.
Give a physical reason why the SE is densely populated.
More temperate climates allow for easier living conditions, crops grow better.
What is the main reason why the costal areas of Brazil is so densely populated, giving 3 specific locations.
These areas are the main commercial/industrial areas with large cities :
Rio - the capital
São Paulo - hi-tech industries and financial centres
Belo Horizonte - heavily industrial, many ports
