Brakes Flashcards
What are the common rim brake styles?
-cantilever
-caliper brake - side pull
-caliper brake - center pull
- linear pull
- direct pull
- V-brake
What are the 2 ways disc brakes can be operated?
mechanically (via a cable)
hydraulically (using fluid under pressure - like cars & trucks)
What are some advantages of disc brakes?
friction material similar to cars/trucks, rather than rubber
the wheel is no longer the wear surface
better braking in wet conditions
How should you examine rim break pads for wear?
-examine how much friction material is remaining
-press your finger nail into the brake pad
if the pad’s rubber is rock-hard, replace the pads
if the pad has some give to it, you can likely reuse them
What should be done to the mounting boss before caliper installation?
- clean using nylon scrub pad or fine emery paper
- wipe it clean
- apply a thin coat of grease
What difference is there between the (usually 3) holes where you install the caliper spring?
Each hole has different spring tension
What is brake squeal caused by?
squeal is caused by high frequency flexing & rebound of the brake caliper arms
How much toe in should you have?
.5mm-1.5mm
