What are the general steps for servicing bearings?
- disassemble
- thorough cleaning
- inspection
races: check for pitting - replace worn bearings
- apply new grease to bearings and races
- assemble
- adjust bearings
all slack needs to be removed
bearings should spin freely, but should not wiggle or have play
When servicing wheel bearings, what side should you remove your cone from?
remove cones from left side (non-drive side)
What are the 2 styles of cranks? (OR what are the 2 styles of crank arm extraction tools?)
square taper cranks (blue tool)
splined cranks (black tool)
What are the 2 designs of headsets?
older bikes used threaded forks
most bikes built since the ‘90s use threadless forks
What are the 2 styles of bottom brackets?
Sealed Cartridge Style Bottom Bracket Bearings
* no lubrication or adjustment required - in use since early 1990’s
* on most bikes, the right side uses a left hand (reverse) thread
Three-piece
- Assembling spindle may be asymmetrical
longer half should go on the right side of the bike (drive side)
any markings on the spindle should be readable from the riding position
