Brainstem Anatomy Flashcards
Three main divisions of Brainstem
Midbrain, pons, medulla
Cranial nerve 1
enters into anterior fossa and carries olfactory info
Cranial nerve 2
passes from orbit and into middle cranial fossa, carries visual information
Cranial nerves 3, 4, 5, 6
emerge from brainstem within posterior cranial fossa, travel forward to reach the middle cranial fossa and through foramen in middle cranial fossa in order to exit cranial cavity
cranial nerves 7, 8,9,10,11, and 12
emerge from brainstem in posterior cranial fossa, course for a short distance then exit cranial cavity via foramen in posterior cranial cavity
Brainstem levels, rostral to caudal
Rostral midbrain, pons,rostral medulla,caudal medulla
Brainstem: cross section regions
Tectum, Tegmentum, Basal Portion
Tectum
dorsal, posterior to ventricular spaces
Tegmentum
mid-region anterior to ventricular spaces (reticular formation found here)
Basal Portion
ventral region
Reticular formation
complex neural network in core of medulla pons and midbrain, regulates neural activity throughout the CNS. Helps regulate: resporatory and cardio functions, altertness, attention motivation, and motor movement
