Brainstem Flashcards
What are the longitudinal divisions of the brainstem
Basilar (ventral-motor)
Tegmentum(dorsal- sensory)
Tectum(dorsal-orient eyes and head -colliculi, reflex ccontrol of eye muscles)
What nerve is in all 3 levels of brainstem?
CN V- spinal nucleus of trigeminal nerve
What is solitary nucleus?
Visceral afferents and taste from CN VII, XI, X
What is nucleus ambiguus?
Motor efferent in CN IX, X, XI to pharynx, larynx, upper esophagus. Output- swalling
Cuneate and gracilis tubercles
Ascending tracts
What nucleus in the midbrain tegmentum gets proprioceptive input from muscles of mastication
Mesencephalic nucleus- CN v
What is function of RF?
Integrate sensory/cortical info, regulate motor and autonomic fxns, modulate pain with descending influences, ascending RAS-consciousness system that governs alertness sleep and attn.
What are the key NT in the RF?
DA- vent tegmental
Ach- peduncculopontine
NE- locus ceruleus
SE-raphe
DA goes where?
Midbrain- Ventral tegmental area and SN
Mesostriatal (SNPc)
Movement - PD
Mesolimbic
Reward and addiction
Mesocortical
To cx-working memory attentional aspects of mvmt initiation
(Hold info to solve math problem or phone #)
Degenerative issues found here in PD
Ach fxn
ALERTNESS**, memory influence mvmt via BG (PD signs) and reticular areas- Reticulospinal tract
ALSO= mesenccephalic locomotor center -animals it causes coordinated locomotion
SE- rostral raphe
Project to cx, BG, thalamus
Fxn-arousal psychiatric disorders
Caudal raphe
Project to cerebellum, SC, medulla
Fxn- mood motor control pain inhibition breathing temperature control
NE- locus and lateral tegmental in pons and medulla
Project to entire forebrain
Fxn- attn /sleep regulation, mood pain inhibition
