Brain structures/functions Flashcards
Thalamus
Works to correlate consciousness, sleep, and sensory interperetarion
hypothalamus
links nervous and endocrine systems via pituitary gland
amygdala
responsible for emotion, survival instincts, and memory
hippocampus
Long term memory and spatial navigation
Medulla
breathing, heart and blood vessel function, digestion, sneezing and swallowing. Center of circulation and respiration
cerebellum
Recieves info from sensory systems, spinal cord, and other parts of the brain, as well as regulating motor movements and voluntary activity
Reticular formation
States if consciousness such as alertness and sleep
frontal/prefrontal lobes
organizing, planning, problem solving, selective attention, personality and higher cognitave functions
Parietal lobe
Center of sensation and perception, integrates sensory input with visual system
Temporal lobe
high level auditory processing and auditorial perception
Occupital lobe
Visual processing center
Broca’s area
Control center for speaking muscles
Wernicke’s area
understanding speech
cingulate/angular gyrus
formation and processing of emotion, learning and memory
Sensory cortex
recieves all sensory input from the body
