Brain Structure/scan Flashcards
How does MRI scan brain
MRI scans brain by:
Uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce cross section of images
When radiowaves stop, nuclei of H atoms releases energy and amount released depends on density of tissue
How does CT scan brain
CT scans brains by :
Uses radiation to produce cross section images of brain- X rays detected and used to produce image by computer
Dense structure absorb more radiation than less dense so show up as a lighter colour on scan
What is CT scan used for
CT scan is used to monitor brain tissue over course of an illness
What are adv and dis adv of MRI scan
Adv of MRI scan are: gives good resolution Non invasive Dis adv of MRI scan are: expensive Not portable
What are adv and dis adv of CT scans
Adv of CT scans are: Non-invasive Quick, can take 5mins Produces detailed images Dis adv of CT scans are: Not portable Exposes patient to radiation
How can MRI investigate brain tumour
MRI can investigate brain tumours by:
Identify location of tumour
Size/type of tumour
Can monitor growth of tumour
Why is MRI more useful than CT when identifying tumours
MRI is more useful than CT when identifying tumours because:
MRI gives better resolution so more detail can be seen
Doesn’t use X rays so safer and can be used more often
What does cerebellum control
Cerebellum controls voluntary actions
