Brain regulation of emotions/ personality Flashcards
Injury to or disruption of function in many parts of the brain can affect what?
Personality and emotional functioning - personality/ emotional changes are much less understood and studied than cognitive deficits because they are more difficult to objectively define, measure, and evaluate.
Brain areas most involved in control/ expression of emotions/personality:
Right hemisphere: expression and comprehension of emotion;
- Prefrontal; orbitofrontal cortex
- Medial temporal/ ventral medial cortex - anterior cingulate
- Anterior-medial temporal - amygdala
- However, there are multiple cortical and subcortical systems involved in emotions/ personality
Damage to the 4-5 systems named for being involved in control/expression of emotions/ personality will produce
less consistent changes in this area re. emotion, etc., than cognitive deficits
There is much more variability in___following brain injury than in____following brain injurty
personality vs. cognitive - i.e., brain damage produces more consistent effects on cognitive functions than it does on personality
Premorbid personality plays a significant role in
the affect of brain injury on personality change - brain networks mediating personality are more diffusely distributed
