Brain: Overview & Protective Layers (11) Flashcards
1
Q
What is the brain?
A
Part of CNS contained in cranial cavity
(Brainstem, cerebellum, diencephalon, cerebrum)
2
Q
Brainstem
A
connects spinal cord to brain; integration of reflexes
necessary for survival
3
Q
Cerebellum
A
involved in control of locomotion, balance, posture
- 50% of brains neurons
4
Q
Diencephalon
A
thalamus, epithalamus, hypothalamus, subthalamus
- thirst/hunger, body temp, mood/emotions, sensory info
5
Q
Cerebrum
A
conscious thought, control
- planning, reasoning, analyzing, memories, speech, coordination
6
Q
The brain is protected by:
A
- Cranial bones
- Cranial meninges
pia, arachnoid, and dura mater
cranial dura mater is composed of 2 layers - Cerebrospinal fluid
7
Q
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
A
- portion of our blood
- serum-like fluid lacking proteins, but containing nutrients (mainly glucose)
- bathes and protects the brain and spinal cord
- most synthesized in the choroid plexus – lateral
ventricles
8
Q
What cells produce CSF?
A
ependymal cells
9
Q
Brainstem parts
A
midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata
