Brain, Nerves And Reflex Flashcards
Where is the Cerebral Cortex (Cerebrum) and what does it control?
Top, front of brain. Memory, consciousness, language, speech (THINKING actions)
Define the nervous system.
The nervous system senses the environment and processes information so we can respond.
Where is the medulla and what does it control?
Bottom, thin strip, below cerebellum. Breathing, heartbeat (things you DONT THINK about)
Where is the cerebellum and what does it control?
Bottom and back of brain. Movement and co-ordination.
How can the brain be mapped?
- MRI (scanning)
- Electric Stimulation
- Accidents
What are the main sense organs and the senses?
Skin - Temperature, Pressure, Touch, Pain
Eyes - Light
Ears - Sound, Balance
Nose & Tongue - Chemicals - Smell, Taste
Describe the path of a reflex reaction.
Stimulus - Receptor - Sensory Neurone - (Synapse) - Relay Neurone - (Synapse) - Motor Neurone - Effector - Response
What is a synapse?
A gap between NEURONES where the IMPULSE is converted to a CHEMICAL (called NEUROTRANSMITTER).
