Brain injuries and disorders Flashcards
What is the key idea of brain injuries?
brain injury could change people’s behaviour and cause to commit crime
Case study about brain injury
Phineas Gage case. He was a railway worker and due to accident he got beat to his brain and his frontal lob damaged. After that incident his behaviour totally changed and be more violent and aggressive person which shows us that brain injuries makes people more violent and aggressive so could cause commit crime.
Evidence studies for it
Based on some studies 70% of men in prison sustained their brain injury before their first offence
Also, 62% of women in prison with a brain injury sustained it through domestic violence.
In biochemical explanations how many examples and which ones?
Sex hormones
Blood sugar
Substances used
Seratonin
Link between blood sugar and criminality
High blood sugar cause being unwell, feeling stressed
Low blood sugar cause mood changes, sudden feeling of excess nervous, irratable, anxious
Low blood sugar can trigger aggressive reactions
Alcohol consumption is closely linked to violent crimes.
Link between substance use and criminality
Heroin and crack addicts in England are responsible for nearly half of burglaries and robberies
Cannabis cause scz
Drugs can affect the amygdala- produces feeling of anxiety and irrability.
Binge drinking- violent behaviour
Link between testestrone level and criminality
High testestrone levels found in prisoners who were more likely to engage in violence+ break prison rules
Positive association between cortisol& testestrone& violent crime
Link between seratonin and criminality
Studies shows that low level seratonin level is liked with higher aggression, regulated signals between neurons that control mood regulations
Scerbo and Raine 1993 - meta analysis on 29 studies into anti-social adults and children, finding lowe level seratonin in all of them.
Impulsive aggression
