brain imaging technologies Flashcards
PET SCAN Definition
it is a type of nuclear medicine imaging which includes the injection of radioactive dye mixed with glucose into the patient which produces measurable gamma rays as it is metabolised in the brain. it is presumed that more the metabolisation of sugar in a prticular region of the brain the greater the activity. the rays are detected and turns them into an image
PET SCAN advantages
shows the brain in action as it fucntions, identify illnesses in early stage, SR- 4mm, TP- 30-40 sec
PET SCAN disadvantages
pregnant women, diabetic patients cannot undergo
MRI SCAN definition
hydrogen atoms emit energy when placed in an external magnetic field and when detected can be mapped based on their relative distribution to form a static image
MRI SCAN use
detect brain abnormalities, tumors, infections, and bleeding
MRI SCAN disadvantage
people with metal in their body, claustrophobic people, expensive and noisy
MRI SCAN advantage
no exposure to radiation, effective resolution for the detection of abnormalities
fMRI SCAN definition
brain imaging technology which shows the ongoing function as well as the structure. it uses the Blood oxygen level-dependent signal to form a picture
fMRI SCAN advantages
good spatial resolution of 1-2 mm, allows to see function, no radiation
fMRI SCAN disadvantages
temporal resolution of only 1 second
