The ‘Brain Hypothesis’

A

Plato (4th Century) = head was close to heaven= most important organ
Aristotle (4th Century)= heart was organ of thinking and feeling
Hippocrates (460-377 BC) understood that epilepsy originates in the brain and believed in the ‘brain hypothesis’.
Galen (129-199 BC) - believed cerebral ventricles of the brain carried out thinking and other processes. He had observed behavioural changes after head injury to gladiators

A

Monism – only one is real either the physical
(materialism) or spiritual (idealism)
Dualism – both exist. Descartes claimed there is brain and mind. That they interact in the pineal gland
