Brain Edema Flashcards
1
Q
How many types of cerebral edema ?
A
4 types ?
1- vasogenic edema
2- cellular or cytotoxic edema
3- interstitial edema
4- osmotic edema
2
Q
What us the vasogenic edema and where it’s happened?
A
- disruption of blood brain barrier with ions and proteins move freely to extravascular tissue (space) ~> osmotic draw of fluid into interstitial space .
Ex : peritumor edema 😫
3
Q
What is the cellular edema , and where it can happened ?
A
- within minutes of insult/injury
- cell lack of hemostatic mechanisms ~> sodium enter the cell freely ~> fluid ~> edema
(( Na/K pump Failure )) 🫧🩵 - ex:
- tramatic brain injury
- stroke
4
Q
What is the interstitial edema ? And where it’s gonna happened?
A
It is outflow of CSF from VENTRICLES to interstitial area of the brain
-ex :
* hydrocephalus
* meningitis
5
Q
What is the osmotic edema ? And where it’s gonna happened?
A
Dearrangement affecting osmolarity ~> pull water from plasma to tissue
Ex :
* hyponatremia
* DKA
