Brain areas Flashcards
Supplementary motor area
on the midline surface of the hemisphere just in front of (anterior to) the primary motor cortex leg representation.
Premotor cortex
lying within the frontal lobe of the brain just anterior to the primary motor cortex.
Posterior Parietal Cortex
the portion of parietal neocortex posterior to the primary somatosensory cortex
Prefrontal Cortex
directly behind the eyes and the forehead
Broca’s Area
in the frontal lobe of the dominant hemisphere, usually the left, of the brain with functions linked to speech production.
Frontal eye fields
frontal cortex, more specifically in Brodmann area 8 or BA8, of the primate brain.
Spino cerebellum, vestibulo cerebellum and neo cerebellum
See Notion
Caudate nucleus, putamen (together striatum) and globus pallidus
See Notion
Substantia nigra
lowest of the basal ganglia
Hippocampus
the medial temporal lobes of the cerebrum
Parahippocampal area, including the perirhinal, entorhinal and parahippocampal cortex
See Notion
Supramarginal gyrus
- Portion of the parietal lobe
- Anterior to the Angular Gyrus
Amygdala
in the medial temporal lobe, just anterior to (in front of) the hippocampus
Orbitofrontal cortex
The orbitofrontal cortex is the area of the prefrontal cortex that sits just above the orbits (also known as the eye sockets). It is thus found at the very front of the brain, and has extensive connections with sensory areas as well as limbic system structures involved in emotion and memory.
Cingulate cortex/gyrus
- See notion
- The Cingulate gyrus lies on the medial aspect of the cerebral hemisphere. It forms a major part of the limbic system which has functions in emotion and behaviour. The cingulate gyrus is an arch-shaped convolution situated just above the corpus callosum.
