Brain anatomy Flashcards
What are the three main regions of the brain?
Hindbrain, Midbrain, Forebrain
What part of the brain is responsible for coordinated movement?
Cerebellum
Which part of the brain controls autonomic functions such as breathing and heart rate?
Medulla oblongata
What is the function of the pons?
Relays signals between the cerebellum, medulla and the rest of the brain. Involved in sleep, respiration, swallowing, taste, bladder control, and balance.
Which structure processes auditory signals and sends them to the medial geniculate nucleus in the thalamus?
Inferior colliculus
What is the role of the superior colliculus?
Processes visual signals and participates in control of eye movements.
What functions does the amygdala serve?
Processes memory, emotions, and decision-making.
What is the primary function of the basal ganglia?
Participate in motor control, including eye movements and other voluntary movements as well as procedural and habitual learning.
What are the key roles of the frontal lobe?
Involved in voluntary movement, memory processing, planning, motivation, and attention.
What is the function of the hippocampus?
Consolidation of short-term memory into long-term memory.
How does the hypothalamus connect the nervous system to the endocrine system?
Links the nervous system to the endocrine system via the pituitary gland.
What is the primary function of the occipital lobe?
Visual processing.
What does the parietal lobe primarily process?
Sensory processing.
What hormone is modulated by the pineal gland?
Melatonin
What is the function of the posterior pituitary?
Projection through which the hypothalamus secretes oxytocin and ADH (vasopressin).
