Q

Name and briefly outline 2 divisions of the human nervous system

A

The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord
The central nervous system consists of the cerebral cortex, the auditory cortex and the visual cortex
The peripheral nervous system transmits messages via neurons from and to the CNS. The peripheral system consists of the Autonomic nervous system and the Somatic nervous system which branch off into the Parasympathetic and the sympathetic nervous system

Q

Explain what is meant by the flight or fight response

A

Its a response which stimulates from the build of adrenaline which is released by the adrenal medulla in response to a threat. Adrenaline increases blood glucose levels, heart rate which can also increase in energy. The sympathetic nervous system (active state) carries out the response/ physiological stages

Q

Explain differences and similarities between the Endocrine system and the NS

A

endocrine systems hormones travel in the blood
endocrine is longer lasting
endocrine is slower
endocrine is chemicals whereas NS is neurons/electrical

Q

What is the role of the Peripheral NS (PNS)

A

transmits messages via neurons to and from the CNS. It consists of 2 components the somatic NS and the autonomic NS
The ANS is important for vital functions e.g. breathing (homeostatis)
The SNS is important for muscle movement which receives info from the sensory receptors
The parasympathetic NS function is to relax (digest)
The sympathetic function is active state it plays a role in adrenaline (flight or fight)
