Brain Flashcards
Where is our brain stem located and what does it do?
- located at the base of our skull and top of the spine
- moderates our need to live such as breathing, heart rate, impulses (such as sex) and fight or flight response.
Where is the cerebellum located and what does it do?
- located at the back of the brain
- moderate movement and coordination
- some evidence that it plays a role in our decision making
Where is the cerebral cortex located and what does it do?
- large part of brain
- made up of occipital, parietal, temporal, and frontal lobes
- complex thinking, short term memory, and sensory stimulation
What does our frontal lobes do?
- thinking
- creativity
- logic
What connects the two sides of the brain?
corpus callosum
What does corpus callosum do?
Acts like telephone wires sending messages back and forth?
What does neuroplasticity mean?
Our brain can change and adapt which is shaped by our actions and environment.
What is meant by second brain?
Gut - enteric nervous system (ENS)
What is meant by brain-gut axis?
The nutrients our gut absorbs can affect our brain, moods and behaviour much like a tree receiving nutrients from the soil and being pulled up through the trunk.
How much energy does our brain require?
20%
The gut is lined with what?
More than 100 million nerve cells.
What happens to a baby in the womb.
Both the enteric nervous system and central nervous system develop from the same tissue and are connected by the vagus nerve
What does CNS and ENS have in common? (4)
neurotransmitters. serotonin, dopamine and acetylcholine
What does the gut consist of?
bacteria that forms our individually unique microbiome
The enteroendocrine cells resembles synapses that neurons use to communicate. How does that work?
The synapses use the vagus nerve to take up messages to the brain and send messages faster than through the blood.
