Brain Flashcards
Brain parts
Telencephalon- cerebrum Diencephalon- thalamus, hypothalamus, etc. Mesencephalon- midbrain Metencephalon- cerebellum, pons Mylencephalon- medulla oblongata
Arterial supply to brain
•Vertebral artery from subclavian artery :
Enters by foramen magnum, anterior to pons
Gives a small middle meningeal branch
Forms basilar artery at pons medulla junction
Posteroinferior cerebellar branch
Pontine branches
Anteroinferior cerebellar branches
Superior branches
• Internal carotid artery-
Anterior cerebral branch with communicating branch
Middle cerebral branch with posterior communicating branch
• circle of willus-
Anterior cerebral branch with communicating
Middle cerebral with posterior communicating branch
Basilar artery bifurcation
Stroke
Blood supply to brain affected, based on etiology:
- Ischemic- thrombic or embolic
- Hemorrhagic
Venous draingae
Via sinuses- Superior saggital sinus Inferior saggital sinus Straight sinus C Transverse sinus Sigmoid sinus Inferior petrosal Superior petrosal Cavernous sinus Intercavernous sinus Internal juglar vein
Cavernous sinus
Internal carotid artery Abducens nerve 3rd nerve 5-1 5-2 4th nerve
Cerebrum external features
3 poles-frontal, occipital, temporal
3 surfaces- medial, anterolateral, inferior- occipital & orbital parts
4 borders- superomedial, inferolateral, medial orbital, medial occipital
Sulci on cerebrum
- central
- lateral
- parietoocciptal
