Brachial plexus Flashcards
What are the roots of the superior, middle and inferior trunk?
Superior: C5, C6
Middle: C7
Inferior: C8, T1
What is the lateral, posterior and medial cords formed from?
Lateral: Anterior division of superior and middle trunks
Posterior: posterior divisions of superior, middle and inferior trunks
Middle: Anterior division of inferior trunk
From what part of the brachial plexus is the musculocutaneous nerve formed from?
Lateral cord
C5, C6, C7
From what part of the brachial plexus is the axillary nerve formed from?
Posterior cord of superior trunk
C5, C6
From what part of the brachial plexus is the median nerve formed from?
Formed from lateral and medial cords
C6-T1
From what part of the brachial plexus is the radial nerve formed from?
Posterior cord of all trunks
C5-C8, T1
From what part of the brachial plexus is the ulnar nerve formed from?
Formed from medial cord
C8, T1
What are the minor branches coming off the roots of the brachial plexus?
Dorsal scapular nerve
Long thoracic nerve
What are the minor branches coming off the trunks of the brachial plexus?
Suprascapular nerve
Nerve to subclavius
What are the minor branches coming off the lateral cord of the brachial plexus?
Lateral pectoral nerve
What are the minor branches coming off the medial cord of the brachial plexus?
Medial pectoral nerve
Medial cutaneous nerve of arm
Medial cutaneous nerve of forearm
What are the minor branches coming off the posterior cord of the brachial plexus?
Superior subscapular
Thoracodorsal
Inferior subscapular
What is ‘Erb’s palsy’?
Upper brachial plexus injury: excessive increase in angle of neck and shoulder caused by difficult birth or shoulder trauma.
Characteristic ‘waiter’s tip’
Affects nerves directly innervated by C5 and C6. (Musculocutaneous, Axillary, Suprascapular, Nerve to subclavius)
What motor and sensory functions are impaired in Erb’s palsy?
Motor: Abduction of the shoulder, Flexion at the shoulder, Lateral rotation of the arm, Supination of the forearm
Sensory: Loss of sensation down lateral side of the arm
What is Klumpke’s palsy’?
Lower brachial plexus injury: excessive abduction of the arm
Affects nerves of the T1 root, ulna and median nerves.
Clawed hand: hyperextended metacarpophalangeal joint and flexed interphalangeal joint.
