Boys High Induction Work Flashcards
Function of a cell surface membrane
Regulating the movement of substances in and out of the cell
Function of chloroplast
Converts light energy into chemical stored in organic compounds
E.g. sugars
Function of call vacuole
Maintains pressure - pushers cytoplasm against the cell wall - to keep turgid and prevent wilting
Function of mitochondria?
Produce energy through cellular respiration
Function of a nucleus?
Stores DNA, where ribosomal RNA genes are transcribed, protein synthesis and growth
Function of chromosomes?
Contain genetic material , transmit DNA
Function of ribosomes?
Receive genetic info form DNA in the form of RNA , uses it as instructions to make proteins
Function of a cell wall?
Supports cell, gives structure which prevents it from changing shape
Function of a rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Produce proteins for the rest of the cells to function, contains ribosomes on it
Function of a smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Synthesisers lipids, phoslipids as in plasma membranes and steroids - functions in many metabolic processes
Function of Golgi apparatus?
Transport, modify and package proteins and lipids into vesicles for delivery to targeted destinations
Function of vesicles?
Organise cellular structures. Involved in metabolism , control and enzyme storage, transport buoyancy control and acts as a chemical reaction chamber
What organisms carry out photosynthesis?
Plants
Algae
Some bacteria
Where does photosynthesis take place?
Chloroplasts
Energy store at the beginning and the end of photosynthesis?
Sunlight
Glucose
