Bowlbys theory of maternal deprivation- Attachment Flashcards
Bowlbys theory of maternal deprivation:
- if monotropic attachment is disrupted during the critical period
- prolonged separation from mother
- deprivation= negative and irreversible consequences
- impacts infants social, emotional and intellectual skills
consequences of deprivation:
- delinquency
- affectionless psychopathy
- Low IQ
what is delinquency?
- due to disrupted social development
- behaviour is outside of accepted norms
- petty crime
what is affectionless psychopathy?
- due to disrupted emotional development
- unable to show caring behaviour
- unable to show empathy for others feelings
- little guilt for harmful actions
what is low IQ?
- due to disrupted intellectual development
- cognitive abilities are lower than peers
what is the internal working model?
- monotrpoic relationships relationship w mother is first and most important
- forms template for future relationships
- schema
what is the continuity hypothesis?
- deprivation caused by prolonged separations from mum
- limits ability for infant to form effective internal working model
- unsuccessful childhood and adult relationships
- issues w parenting skills
Evaluating maternal deprivation: strength 44 thrives study (1944)
- Bowlby (1944) studied 44 child theives and 44 emotionally disturbed non thieves
- interviewed affectionless psychopathy
- parents asked about maternal deprivation during critical period
- 14 theives match criteria for affevtionless psychopathy compared to control group
- 12 had prolonged separation compared to 2 of control group
- link between maternal deprivation and delinquency
Evaluating maternal deprivation: limitations, 44 thieves is correlational
- 44 theives study is correlationak
- deprivation and delinquency could be linked to a 3rd factor
- kids who experience deprivation may also suffer extreme poverty
- have contact w criminal relatives that could be role models or have family history of mental health problems
Evaluating maternal deprivation: strength, pos changes to police related child welfare
- pos changed to police related child welfare
- visiting time for mums in hospitals
- ratio to carers and infants in nursery
- length of maternity leave
Evaluating maternal deprivation: strength, economic changes
- improved child welfare
- impacted economy= nursery places are more expensive
Evaluating maternal deprivation: strength, social sensitivity
- social sensitivity should be considered
- focus on maternity rather than paternity leave
- may have resulted in increase in gender pay gap
- women missing out on development and promotion
Evaluating meternal deprivation: limitation, monitory exaggerate mum as primary caregiver
- focus on mum= gender biassed
- alpha bias= underestimating role of father and other attachment figures
- Schaffers work shows children move from one attachment to 87% having multiple in 18 months
- evidence for important father role in early attachment
- taking on sensitive responsive role when acting as primary caregiver
Evaluating maternal deprivation: limitation, sensitive not critical period
- bowlby argued critical damage irreversible bc of deprivation
- orphan studies= sensitive periods not critical
- Rutter and Hodges: deprivation= damaging effects long term
- BUT with suitable care many effects can be reversed
