bowlbys mono tropic theory Flashcards
what is monotropy
- the idea that infants form one special attachment, usually to their mothers, which is more important than all other attachments
- although the child may have multiple attachments, this attachment is of highest significance
what is the law of sacculated separation
- the effects of every single separation from primary attachment figure adds up and can have bad consequences towards infant
what are social releasers
innate behaviors like crying, smiling, and cooing—that trigger caregiving responses from adults.
- these behaviours help ensure the caregiver stays close to the infant, which ensures survival
what is the internal working model
- content from bowlbys attachment theory
- refers tio mental framework a child develops based on their early experiences, with their primary caregiver,
shapes how the child views themselves, other and relationships as a whole
give an example of the internal working model
if a child has a secure attachment with their caregiver, they are more likely to develop a positive internal working model, e.g believing they are worthy of love and others can be trusted
whereas if a person as an insecure attachment with their caregiver, they are more likely to develop an negative internal working model e.g believing that they are unworthy of love and finding it difficult to trust people in the future
what is a critical period
bowlby said if a child doesn’t form an attachment within the first 2-3 years of their life, or if the attachment is disrupted, the child may suffer long term negative effects on their emotions and social development
