separation vs deprivation
A
separation means child not being in presence of primary figure while deprivation is when child doesn’t receive emotional care

A
If a child separated from its mother during critical period (first 2 and a half years of life) and deprived of emotional care psychological damage is inevitable

effects on development from deprivation
A
- intellectually will become delayed therefore meaning low IQ
- emotionally will be identified as affection less psychopath as inability to express guilt or strong emotion (lack of remorse)

key study - Bowlby and 44 thieves
A
- Sample of 44 teenage criminals accused of stealing
- all teenagers interviewed for signs of affection less psychopathy
- families also interviews to show if they had prolonged separation from mother early on
- control group of emotionally disturbed but non criminal group set up

findings of study
A
- 14 out 44 were described as affection less psychopaths
- 12 out of them has prolonged separation from mum early on
- only 5 of remaining 30 thieves experienced separation
- prolonged separation leads to affection less psychopathy
