bowlby's theory of maternal deprivation Flashcards
explain Bowlby’s theory of maternal deprivation
being seperated or deprived from a mother in early childhood has serious consequences on them (emotionally and intellectually)
what were bowlby’s 5 hypothesis
damage will be done to children who haven’t had a satisfactory attachment history
their internal working model will be ultimately affected
children have a biological need for warmth, intimate and continuous relationship with mother or substitute mother
if this isn’t met the child suffers from maternal deprivation
when does the critical period occur
first 2 and a half years of life are considered critical for psychological development
what happens if a child is seperated from their mother during the critical period
psychological damage is inevitable
what age is there a continuing risk for damage to psychological development up to
5 years
define separation and give an example
child not being in presence of primary attachment figure
e.g: going to school
define deprivation and give an example
extended separation where an attachment has been formed but it is disrupted
They lose an element of primary attachment figure care
e.g: mother being depressed
define privation
the failure to from any attachments during early life
(OPPOSITE OF DEPRIVATION)
what are the effects of maternal deprivation
affected emotional development
affected intellectual development
explain goldfarb’s research on intellectual development
lower IQ in children who remained institutions in comparisons to those who were fostered, and had a higher standard of emotional care
explain how in maternal deprivation there can delayed emotional development
affectionless psychpathology
ianbility to experewince guilt or strong emotion towards others
prevetns aperson developing nornam lrelationships and is assoicated with criminality
affectionless pyshcopahts cannot appreciarw the feelings of victims and thereofre lack remorse
what study did Bowlby use to support his MDH
44 thieves study
how many participants were there in Bowlby’s 44 thieves study
44 juvenile thieves
what was the procedure of Bowlby’s 44 thieves study
interviews with thieves and their families
what were the findings of Bowlby’s 44 thieves study
14 of the sample were idenitifed as affectionless psychopaths
12 of these have experienced prolonged separation from their mother in infancy (in the first 2 years of life)
in control group (non offenders) only 2 had experienced prolonged separation
Bowlby concluded that the effects of MD have caused affectionless and delinquent behaviour amongst the juvenile thieves
