Bowlby's Theory of Maternal Deprivation Flashcards
Define separation
Separation is the termination of continuity of a relationship after a relationship was established
Define deprivation
The failure to form an attachment to a primary caregiver, in relation to attachment theory occurs through long term separations or frequent short-term separations, thereby affecting the child’s long-term development
For how long was a child susceptible to deprivation?
Bowlby said a child would be affected during the first 30 months (it is critical to avoid separations during this time) and could also be susceptible for up to 5 years
List the consequences of deprivation
Inability to make attachments with others and therefore affecting childhood and adulthood relationships (1)
Affectionless psychopathy, where individuals have no shame or guilt (lack a social conscience) and are more likely to commit crime (2)
Intellectual retardation (3) and the tendency to perform badly on IQ tests, school examinations, etc.
Bed-wetting (4)
Depression (5)
