what does bowlby’s monotropic theory suggest?
attachment is an evolutionary mechanism - innate
- one attachment is more important than all the others = primary attachment figure
what is a social releaser?
behaviour that have evolved to elicit attachment behaviours in adults
what are the two concepts of his theory?
continuity hypothesis and internal working model
what is the internal working model?
is a blueprint for future relationships - a mental representation of our relationship with out primary attachment figure
what is the continuity hypothesis?
the idea that emotionally secure children go on to be emotionally secure and confident adults - the attachment behaviour in childhood act as a template for future relationships
IWM: if a child is positive and loved, what attachment do they develop?
secure
if a child is rejected and unloved, what attachment do they develop?
avoidant - avoid intimacy
if a child is angry and confused, what attachment do they develop?
resistant
