Bowel and Bladder Dysfunction Flashcards
Typical function of urinary tract in relation to continence control
Anatomic integrity of bladder and urethra
Intact neurologic pathways and centers for control of volume, micturation and pattern of urine production
Physical and mental ability and willingness of person to perform toileting
Assessment information for the female bladder
Frequency Urgency Nocturia Dysuria Urine color Prior incontinence Obstetric history*
Assessment information for the male bladder
Frequency Urgency Nocturia Dysuria Urine color Hesitancy and straining* Prior incontinence
What is Transient Incon (PPT only lists causes) and what is the treatment?
UTI acute confusion fecal impaction med side effects medical conditions affecting urine production like CHF and ARF
Treatment= Treat cause and icon will be fixed
What is Urge Incon?
Involuntary loss of moderate urine with associated strong urge to piss
What is the treatment for Urge incon?
Timed voiding schedule
Fluid management schedule
Behavior changes
What is stress incon?
Involuntary loss of small amount urine from physical exertion, intra-abdominal pressure. Most women get after pussy birth
What is treatment for stress incon?
Pelvic muscle exer
Frequent voiding shed
Behavior changes
Schedule void before activity
What is overflow Incon?
Involuntary loss of urine when pressure in bladder exceeds max urethral pressure- associated with bladder distention.
Freq void small amounts with lots of dribbling small amounts
Prostate problems (bladder never empties)
Weak stream of urine
Feeling of fullness
Treatment for overflow incon?
Timed voiding, double voiding, fluid management, straight cath
What is functional incon?
Leak urine
Inability to toilet train due to physical or cog impairments
Environmental barriers
What is the assessment for uninhibited neurogenic bladder?
Brain lesion in cortex or pons
Reduced bladder capacity
Small or absent postpaid residual volume
Urgency, frequency, and nocturia
What is the plan for inhabited neurogenic bladder?
Habit training
Toilet schedule
Fluid intake before 3pm least after 6pm
Use of toilet or commode to encourage emptying
What is the assessment for reflexive neurogenic bladder?
Spinal Cord s2 interruption Frequent small urination Sensation to bladder about fullness impaired Muscle contraction absent HIGH postpaid residual vol
What is the plan for reflexive neurogenic bladder?
Fluid intake Schedule bladder emptying Valsalva maneuver Spirits of peppermint Straight Cath Foley Cath
