what is enophthalmos?
sunken eyes
-dehydration or emaciated
what is exophthalmos?
eye protrusion
-commonly due to orbital lymphosarcoma.
how will CN VII Facial nerve lesion appear in a cow
drooped ears, ptosis (drooped eyes), and flaccid lip
how will CN V Trigeminal lesion appear in a cow
weak or dropped jaw, difficulty prehending food and chewing food
how will CN VIII Vestibulocochlear lesion appear in a cow
head tilt. note if eyes are on the same plane
How will CN XII hypoglossal lesion appear in a cow
tongue atrophy, protrusion/weakness
how will CN IX and X (glossopharyneal and vagus) disorders appear in a cow
dysphagia and salivation
Do cows have maxillary teeth?
no they have instead paired dental pads
Use eruption of the 8 permanent mandibular incisors to estimate a cow as roughly 2, 3, or 4 yrs old
-Eruption of 1 or 2 permanent central incisors (I1) = 2 years old
-Eruption of at least one of the second set of permanent incisors (I2)= 2-3 years old
-when I1, I2, and I3 are erupted= 3 years old
-when all 8 permanent manibular incisors are erupted= 4 years old
how should the maxillary and frontal sinuses resonance sounnd?
normal, air filled sinuses will sound hollow.
if theres an infection or masses within the sinus, the resonance will be dull and flat
which lymph nodes are palpable in a cow?
mandibular lymph node
superficial cervical lymph node
supramammary lymph node
subiliac lymph node
(parotid lymph node, usually palpable)
where can the supramammary lymph node be located?
along the dorso-caudo-lateral aspect of the udder.
where can subiliac lymph nodes be located?
large cigar shaped
in the flank fold, directly ventral to the tuber coxae, craniodorsal to the stifle.
where can superficial cervical lymph node be located?
along the base of the neck, cranial to the scapula.
where can mandibular lymph node be located?
ventral to mandible, halfway between the rostral border of masseter and the angle of manible.
