Bovine Dermatology Flashcards
What are 5 common dermatological problems in cattle?
Dermatophytosis
Dermatophilosis
Photosensitization
Papillomatosis
Scabby mouth (Contagious Viral Pustular Dermatitis)
(Others: skin lymphosarcoma, anagen defluxion in calves)
Name 3 types of dermatophytosis and the species it affects.
- Microsporon (dogs cats, people)
- Trichophyton (dogs, cats, horses, cows, humans)
- Epidermophyton (humans)
What is the pathogenesis for dermatophytosis?
Contact causes infection
Fungi attacks keratinized tissues (stratum corneum & hair follicles)
What causes Dermatophylosis
A gram +ve bacteria (Dermatophylosis congolensis) which will proliferate in the stratum corneum causing an immune reaction, and severe pain (not pruritic)
How do you treat Dermatophylosis
Chlorhexidine shampoo or Povidone iodine shampoo
Systemic - penicillin, oxytetracycline
How do you tell if you have Dermatophylosis?
Do an indirect fluorecence antibody test
ELISA (single dilution)
What are two things that cause photosensitization? (primary - 2, secondary - 3)
St. John's Wort Buckwheat Secondary (hepatitis first) Hairy panic Sweet grass Caltrop
Other toxins that cause hepatic damage and possibly secondary photosensitization? (6)
2F, BG HLP Fungus of facial eczema Fungus of lupinosis Blue green algae Heliotrope Lantana Patterson's curse
How to diagnose photosensitization secondary to hepatic damage?
Blood tests for liver function/post-mortem examination
How to treat for photosensitization? (3)
Move animals to a new paddock
Give them a dark area
Feedthem cereal hay or low-quality (non-green) pasture
What is caused by the different papilloma strains (BPV)?
1,2,5 = fibropapillomas
3,4, 6 = true papillomas
What do the different papilloma virus types look like?
1 2 3 cutaneous papilloma 4 esophogus to intestine 5 - rice grains - udder 6 - udder & teats - front epithelial
Contageous Viral Pustular Dermatitis
Contageous Excema
Pustular dermatitis
Soremouth
Scabby mouth
Two forms of bovine lymphoma
- Associated with BLV
2. Cutaneous form in young animals < 3 years in age
What does bovine lymphoma look like?
Plaques 1-5 cm in diameter with a scabby covering; hair is shed
