Bormash #3 Flashcards
Define the Central Nervous System. What are its components?
CNS: the main hub of the nervous system
Main components - Brain, Spinal Cord
What are the components of the Peripheral Nervous System? Define each.
Autonomic: controls involuntary muscle movement.
[example: arouses the fight-or-flight response in the body (sympathetic) and calms the fight-or-flight response (parasympathetic)]
Somatic: controls voluntary muscle movement
Define herniated disc.
a condition where one of the discs in the spinal cord moves out of place. Incredibly painful.
Define demyelinating disease.
a condition where the myelin sheath breaks down. usually caused by age or drug use.
List the main components of a neuron.
- nucleus
- dendrites
- axon
- myelin sheath
- axon terminals
What are two demyelinating diseases?
- Multiple Sclerosis
- ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease)
Define Thrombosis.
the buildup of fatty deposits on the walls of the arteries. it is caused by fatty foods.
Define Occlusion.
when fatty deposits close off a blood vessel.
Define Embolism.
a stray piece of crud floating around in the artery.
Define Angioplasty.
a treatment for thrombosis where a balloon is inflated inside the artery, pushing the fatty deposits into the walls of the artery and causing them to flatten out, thereby opening the artery.
Define Bypass Procedure.
a treatment for an occlusion where a section of blood vessel from the leg is transplanted at the site of the occlusion, creating a new route for the blood to pass through.
Define and list the three cerebral arteries.
Cerebral Artery: main artery that passes through the brain.
- Anterior: near the front of the brain
- Middle: self-explanatory
- Posterior: near the back of the brain
What is a CT scan?
- 3D x-ray of the brain
What disease did Jervis discover?
PKU
