What were some of the reasons for immigration to America?
Freedom, job opportunities, free education, democracy
How many people immigrated to America in 1850?
40 million Europeans emigrated to the US (about 10% of Europe’s population)
Why did a free education attract immigrants?
In their home countries, some immigrants would have to pay for schooling, which they might not have been able to afford. A free education gave them opportunities they didn’t have in their own countries.
How did freedom attract immigrants?
Some immigrants did not have freedom in their home countries. In America they had freedom of speech, freedom of religion and a free press. This attracted immigrants to the USA.
Why did democracy attract immigrants?
Many immigrants didn’t have the chance to vote in their home countries, and the idea of getting to choose their leader was appealing to them.
Why did immigrants want to move to the USA? - Money
America had many more job opportunities than in many immigrants’ home countries. Not only were there more jobs available but they were also higher paying than the jobs they had before.

Immigrants are people who come to live permanently in a foreign country.

Why were immigrants disliked by Americans?
Economic concerns - They felt that immigrants were taking American jobs, they drive down wages because there were so many of them competing for jobs, many of them were illiterate so people thought they would be a burden on society
Political concerns - it was feared that immigrants held dangerous extremist views, like anarchism and communism, it was thought that immigrants were unpatriotic
Social concerns - they were blamed for alcohol abuse by temperance groups, they were blamed for the spread of diseases such as cholera and tuberculosis, many were Roman Catholics or Jews so were said to have un-American values
