What is a Job description, what does it include?
A job description is when Human Resources will draw up a job description which describes the tasks that have to be done when a new job is created.
It includes: job title, purpose of job, specific duties, job location and other responsibilities.
What is a Job Specification, what does it include?
A Job Specification is when human resources will produce a person or job specification which describes the sort of person needed to do the job.
It includes: educational qualifications, previous experience, specialised skills and personal attributes.
What are the two types of recruitment?
Internal –> vacancy filled by an existing employee.
External –> vacancy filled by a non-existing employee.
Internal recruitment
Noticeboard or company newspaper
ADV: many people see it, cheap local advertisement.
DISA: not noticed by many, limited footfall.
External recruitment
Local newspaper
ADV: cheaper than national advert, increased target audience.
DISA: not everyone gets a newspaper, expensive for very small advert.
Recruitment agency
ADV: active search for good applicant, more applicants
DISADV: takes time, high recruitment costs
Job centres
ADV: free of cost, staff help support applicants
DISA: not specialised, not targeted
What is selection, what does it include
Selection is choosing the right employee from all of the applicants, it may include:
1. interviews
2. aptitude tests (knowledge)
3. psychometric tests (personality)
Induction and re-training
Induction training: initial training to become familiar with their systems, for example hierarchy, fire drills, tasks/ duties.
Re-training: ongoing training for existing employees following systematic changes.
On-the-job training (adv + disadv)
On-the-job training: training that takes place in the place of the work.
ADV: cheaper, quick to organise, effective, employees still contribute to production.
DISADV: not in depth, limited training, un-motivational, time-consuming
Off-the-job training (adv+disadv)
Off-the-training: training outside the place of work by a specialist.
ADV: wide range of skills learnt, motivate employees, gain more qualifications
DISADV: expensive, no production whilst away, employees may leave, less specific.
Motivating factors
-pay for healthcare, memberships, company car
-promotion, discounts, bonus
-commission (% of sales)
-empowerment and respect within the business
-job safety/ security
-increments in your salary
