A

Researchers must not cause any physical or psychological harm to p’s. They should leave a study in the same state that they entered

What is Deception

A

Lying to p’s, misleading them about the aims or other aspects must be avoided as much as possible

What is Debriefing

A

Done at the end of the study. Researchers should explain the true purpose of the study and check that p’s have not suffered any physical or psychological harm

What are the Costs of breaking Ethical Guidelines

A
  • POINT - Destroys the reputation and integrity if psychological research and psychology as a whole
  • COMMENT - This is a weakness as it results in less research being approved which limits the usefulness of psychological research
  • POINT - Reduces the likeliness of future funding/future p’s
  • COMMENT - This is a weakness as not as much research will be conducted which will limit our knowledge of complex psychological behaviour

What are the Benefits of breaking Ethical Guidelines

A
  • POINT - Increases our knowledge of complex unethical behaviours such as certain disorders
  • COMMENT - This is a strength as it increases our knowledge so increases usefulness
  • POINT - Reduces risk of demand characteristics
  • COMMENT - This is a strength as results are more valid and credible
