Booklet 3: Aims + Hypothesis Flashcards
1
Q
What is a research question
A
An answerable inquiry into a specific concern, issue or theory
2
Q
How do you write a research question
A
- “Will there be a difference between…?”
- “Will there be a relationship between…?”
- “What behaviour will be displayed between…?”
3
Q
How do you write an aim
A
- Read the source to understand what the research is investigating
- Begin with ‘To investigate…’
4
Q
What is the Independent Variable
A
- This is manipulated/changed by the researcher and split into different experimental conditions
- You must always operationalise
5
Q
What is the Dependent Variable
A
- The behaviour that is being measured
- You must always operationalise
6
Q
What is a Hypothesis
A
A testable statement that predicts what the researchers expect the study will find
7
Q
What is an Alternate Hypothesis
A
A statement of prediction between the variables, can include a prediction of direction or no direction
8
Q
What is a Null Hypothesis
A
- A statement of prediction which suggests there will be no difference or relationship
- Suggests that any differences would be purely due to chance
9
Q
What is a One-Tailed Hypothesis
A
- Predicts a specific direction of results
- e.g. significantly more…
10
Q
What is a Two-Tailed Hypothesis
A
- Predicts a difference will be found, but are non-directional in terms of what will be specifically found
- e.g. significant difference…
11
Q
How do you write a hypothesis
A
- There must be clear operationalisation of the IV AND DV
- Include the word SIGNIFICANCE
