Social class definition?
People having the same social, economic, cultural, political or educational status.
Life chances definition?
Social science theory of the opportunities each individual has to improve his or her quality of life.
Cultural capital definition?
The knowledge, experience and or connections one has had through the course of their life that enables them to succeed more so than someone from a less advantaged background. Developed by Bourdieu.
Embourgeoisement definition?
The process, whereby the wealthier members of the working class are becoming middle class.
Traditional Working Class definition?
A socioeconomic term used to describe persons in a social class marked by jobs that provide low pay, require limited skill, or physical labor.
Upper Class definition?
A social class who are the main owners of society’s wealth.
Social closure definition?
The way in which upper class attempt maintain their social position by, for example marrying-off their children to those who are socially, economically and politically eligible (other upper class families).
Public School definition?
Schools outside the state sector, requiring the payment of fees (also called private schools).
Economic Capital definition?
The material wealth and financial assets owned by individuals or families.
Ascetic Middle Class definition?
Habit is definition?
The cultural framework and set of ideas possessed by a social class which influences their cultural tastes and choices.
Elite Social Networks definition?
The way in which members of the upper class have access to other people in powerful positions, which confers various benefits, thus helping to maintain their advantage over the rest of society.
Social Solidarity definition?
The Functionalist idea that in a properly functioning society, all members share it’s norms and values. Key theorist: Durkheim.
Us vs Them model definition?
A key feature of traditional working class identity, based on the idea that the working class were well aware of their position in the class hierarchy and their exploited position in it.
Under class definition?
A class grouping that, according to Murray, consists of individuals who are long-term unemployed, welfare dependant, work shy, single parents, drug addicts and criminals.
