Book 1
Proem. Storm by Juno and Aeolus. Aeneas and men land on Libya. Jupiter’s prophecy (3,30,300.) Venus appears to them as a Spartan girl out hunting and she tells them where they are and Dido’s backstory. Aeneas sad she never appears to him in true form. Venus hides them in mist. Ekphrasis on the Temple of Juno of the Trojan War. Venus sends Cupid. Dido asks Aeneas to tell his tale.

Retelling of Troy: the Wooden Horse, Sinon and Laocoon and Aeneas’ experiences.

DIDO. Venus and Juno arrange the marriage. Zeus sends Mercury to remind Aeneas of his duty. Mercury appears to Aeneas in a dream and tells him to leave immediately. Dido kills herself with sword

THE UNDERWORLD. They visit the Sibyl and she tells them their prophecy. Funeral for Misenus. Aeneas enters the Underworld, sees helmsman Palinurus and Dido. Sees Tartarus before entering Elysium. Sees Anchises- Parade of Heroes
Book 7
WAR IN LATIUM. Latinus’ background and Lavinia prophecy. Latinus welcomes them but says Aeneas must meet him himself and proposes marriage. Juno sends Allecto to Amata and Turnus. Ascanius kills stag, causing all countrymen to join the war. Latinus shuts himself away but Juno opens the Gates of War.
Book 8
AENEAS IN ROME. Tiber appears to Aeneas in a dream telling him about the white sow, to seek help from Evander and that he must pray to Juno. Aeneas sees white sow. Meet Evander. Cacus and Hercules myth. Tour of Evander’s Rome. Shield of Aeneas. Evander gives Aeneas troops of Etruscan men (angry at Mezentius) and sends Pallas with them. Shield given to Aeneas, followed by ekphrasis
Book 9
NISUS AND EURYALUS. Ships turned into nymphs to escape being burned. Nisus and Euryalus watching the gate. Raid the Rutulian camp Euryalus takes Messapus’ helmet, causing them to be spotted and stopped by Volcens. Volcens kills Euryalus, Nisus rushes at him and both are killed. Euryalus’ mother’s grief. Ascanius shoots Numanus then Apollo disguised as Butes stops him. Pandarus and Bitias open the gates, Turnus kills Bitias so Pandarus closes the gates, trapping Turnus inside. Turnus kills Pandarus. Turnus jumps into the river.
Book 10
Council of the gods. Jupiter stops debate, forbidding them to get involved anymore. Nymphs help Aeneas get back to men. Aeneas with fire coming from his head before they land in Latium. Venus stops spears hurting Aeneas. Turnus kills Pallas and takes his baldric. Aeneas hears and flies into a rage- human sacrifices and slaughter. Jupiter goes to Juno and tells her she is right that it is Venus getting involved, he allows her to remove Turnus from the fighting- phantom Aeneas. Death of Lausus. Aeneas is reminded of his own father and lets Lausus’ comrades take him. Mezentius laments. Aeneas kills Mezentius.
Book 11
Aeneas buries comrades and offers Mezentius’ armour as a trophy to Mars. Funeral procession for Pallas with a thousand men as escort. Latin envoys approach Aeneas and ask for a truce so they can bury their men. Peace decided. Evander hears of Pallas’ death. Battle re-starts, Camilla dies. Both armies camp outside the city.
Book 12
Juno approaches Juturna to help Turnus. Latinus and Aeneas agree the truce. Juturna spurs the men to war and the battle starts again. Aeneas injured and Venus helps Iapyx heal him. Venus inspires Aeneas to attack the city. Amata suicide. Jupiter’s weighing scales. Turnus’ sword breaks. Juno reconciled and Jupiter sends Dira omen to make Juturna retreat. Aeneas kills Turnus
