Book 3 Flashcards
What is the recommended total feet of ladder length recommended to be carried on all aerial apparatus per NFPA 1901?
NFPA recommends 115 feet.
Typically, truck companies in the region will carry in excess of 115 feet, but the selection will vary.
How should portable ladders be marked per NFPA?
Portable ladders should be marked or painted at the top 18 inches. They should also have a mark at the middle point to facilitate quick recognition for the balance point.
Where should heat sensor indicators be placed on portable ladders?
Heat sensor indicators shall be located below the 2nd rung and at the halfway point of a ladder.
When should a ladder be removed from service and tested based on the heat sensor indicators?
If the indicators have changed color or have reached their expiration date, the ladder should be removed from service and tested.
At what temperature do the heat sensor indicators attached to ladders change color?
The heat sensor indicators are rated to change color if the temperature on the ladder reaches 300°F.
In aluminum ladder exposed to heat can lose what percent of its load capacity that can accumulate over its lifetime?
In aluminum ladder exposed to heat can lose as much as 25% of its load capacity.
What is the typical maximum reach of most portable ladder complements carried on truck companies?
35 to 45 feet. This can allow access from the ground level 2/4 floor windows and or roof.
How should extension ladders be loaded into the ladder bed of a truck company in order to facilitate the most advantageous carry to the objective?
Extension ladders should be loaded into the ladder bed in an alternating fashion.
How should firefighters grab an extension ladder that is located in the bed area of a truck as necessary to prevent the extension of the ladder in the bed?
Firefighters should remember to grab the fly section of an extension ladder if loaded heel out and grab the bed section if loaded tip out ass so not to extend the ladder in the bed.
How does the surface grade affect the ability of firefighters to deploy portable ladders once the stabilizers are set?
Often, depending on grade, once the stabilizers are set the height of a truck will make portable ladder removal very difficult
What is true regarding carrying heavy extension ladders with one fire fighter verse two firefighters?
With staffing of four or more on a truck company, the need to single-handedly carry the large extension ladder is outweighed by the efficiency of using more personnel. Two firefighters can effectively carry a 35 foot or greater extension ladder, handtools, and a roof ladder to the objective and not be fatigued
What are four factors (reasons for placement) to consider when laddering a structure?
Victim removal.
Access for vent, enter, isolate and search.
Access for hose line advancement. Ventilation operations.
When placing portable ladders on the fire ground, what is the order for priority placement locations? (Where they should be placed)
Fire floor.
Floor above fire.
Adjacent compartments and roof if needed.
If the decision is made to access the roof during a structure fire how many ladders should be placed to the roof?
Two ladders should be placed to the roof at different areas to provide a second means of egress.
In order to select the most appropriate portable ladder for the task to be accomplished, how Should the truck driver estimate the distance in feet per floor for residential and commercial occupancies?
The driver should estimate 9 feet per floor and residential occupancies and 12 feet per floor in commercial occupancies
Which ladder may be used to provide access in place of a typical run of residential stairs?
Since the typical run of residential stairs is 13 feet, the placement of a 14 foot straight ladder can provide access in place upstairs
What portable ladders are appropriate for intended targets for the chart attached below?
Use estimates of 9’ per floor residential and 12’ per floor commercial.
What is the bed length of a 24 foot extension ladder?
14 feet
What is the bed length of a 28 foot two section extension ladder
16’6”
What is the bedded length of a 28 foot three section extension letter
13’6”
What is the bedded length of a 35 foot two section extension ladder
20 feet
What is the bed length of a 35 foot three section extension ladder
16 feet
What is the bed length of a 40 foot two section extension ladder
22’6”
How should a fire fighter secure themselves to a portable ladder if assigned a task that demands a fire fighter work from the ladder?
If an assigned task demands a fire fighter to work from a portable ladder, a leg lock or a ladder belt or Scott multi use strap should be used
