Bony Landmarks Flashcards
Greater Trochanter
One finger on lateral iliac crest. Other hand directly inferior on proximal lateral side of femur. Medially & laterally rotate at hip joint to find the area of most prominence
Lateral Malleolus
Distal end of the fibula, located on the lateral ankle
ASIS
Anterior Superior Iliac Spine
Fingers on anterior part of iliac crest. Move fingers anteriorly and distally to follow iliac crest forward to bony prominences
PSIS
Posterior Superior Iliac Spine
Fingers on posterior part of iliac crest. Move fingers posteriorly and distally to bony prominences
Acromion Process
Abduct shoulder. Palpate top of shoulder to find dip located at the joint. Maintain connection with bone while returning shoulder to neutral
Calcanial Tendon
The gastrocnemius and soleus muscles insert onto the posterior surface of the calcaneus to form the Achilles tendon
Iliac Crest
Superior border of the wing of ilium
Clavicle
Bone that joins the breastbone and scapula
Femoral Condyles
Lateral & medial prominences on distal end of femur
Place several fingers flat over respective region of knee joint. Apply gentle pressure to locate highest elevation in area
Scapula Inferior Angle
Place respective arm on posterior trunk. Palpate down along the medial border of scapula to inferior length. Maintain connection while returning arm to neutral
Scapula Superior Angle
Palpate medial border superiorly to superior border. Continue to superior prominence
Scapula Medial Border
Place respective arm on posterior trunk. Palpate visual prominence. Maintain connection while returning arm to neutral
Spinous Process
Bony projection off posterior of each vertebrae
Olecranon Process
Triceps brachii inserts at proximal end of olecranon process
